Missoula has always been a unique and amazing place for so many reasons; to have lived in, and been part of a place where, for so many years such a prominent and strong symbol watched over us from above, for all the world to see, there just aren't words. I'm thankful and know how fortunate I am to have been able to call this place home during the rein of The Peace Sign. WE NEED OUR PEACE SIGN BACK!

web site: http://myspace.com/spottedsandpiper I fell in love with this town for many reasons, but one of the big ones was we were smart enough to bless our town with THE peace symbol. My kids make up the story that I told them it was the symbol for "AIRPORT". I WANT IT BACK! =( By the way, BEAUTIFUL PHOTOS.
11:46:57pm Jun 5 2007 Mike from sweden. -- I think you have to rework the peace sign.
Keep up.

web site: myspace.com/andreaharsell Hi Steve... As you may know I grew up on N. 2nd just under the peace sign and it made me proud to be born of a town that would display the sentiment for all to see. It saddened me greatly when they took it down. I like the idea of a Peace Park and can't wait to see the flowers I heard they planted there bloom. As with life- Missoula is constantly changing, growing. I was actually looking for some photos of it when I came across this blog. Hope you are well. Peace.
05:10:40pm Apr 4 2007 catnapping -- web site: http://theoddneighbor.blogspot.com I miss it. I want our sign back where it belongs.

Great little site, I very much miss it up on the hill above our town. We bought our house on the Northside because it overlooked the neighborhood. I was bestowed with a section of it - the right chicken foot. We figured the removal of it was the beginning of the really bad period of our recent history. You know Jeannnette Rankin Peace Center is creating a Peace Park lower down on the hill. I thought they were going to bring all the pieces of the Peace back together again but have not heard of any such developments. All of we who hold one of nine pieces do so on agreement that if there should come avail a perfect place to reinstate it that we shall do so. The pieces await that moment. Until then, keep it alive. Lori

Thank you for your images of Missoula's peace sign. I always loved that rather than follow suit of many towns across the nation that greet visitors with a religious symbol, Missoula welcomed all in peace. I miss the symbol, but will always love the town that stands for it.

Lao-tzu, the founder of Daoism, and Sun-Tzu, the forever military strategist. I'm touched by the details of your family, the art works of Sam and Suzanne, the hearty laughter from your father. And the other two as genius brothers. I close your site with a hope, a hope for peace, nature, humanity, and love. Thank you from China.

I have really enjoyed your site, all the photo's, stories and history. Wonderful grandchildren, the artist is fasnating with her diverse styles.
Missoula struck a rememberance connection with me. When Champion Int'l. wanted to buy up major mountian forest land in and around the hollow where I live
citizens "educated" our local government on the past history and business there as well as other places they were in or had left.
I do like our mountains, the forest that grow and all that grows under a forest canopy.

What would I do without this page? I sit and stare at those pictures of Montana -- taking me back there. And the words. " A moment later my first poem began. What touched it off? I think I know. Without any wind blowing, the sheer weight of a raindrop, shining in parasitic luxury on a cordate leaf, caused its tip to dip, and what looked like a globule of quicksilver perfromed a sudden glissando down the center vein, and then, having shed its bright load, the relieved leaf unbent. Tip, leaf, dip, relief -- the instant it all took to happen seemed to me not so much a fraction of time as a fissure in it, a missed heartbeat, which was refunded at once by a patter of rhymes: I say "patter" intentionally, for when a gust of wind did come, the trees would briskly start to drip all together in as crude an imitation of the recent downpour as the stanza I was already muttering resembled the shock of wonder I had experienced when for a moment heart and leaf had been one." -- from Nabokov's Speak, Memory

....you read the Missoulian, checking up on the latest Griz talk. Pick your nose, look out the window and think....maybe a coffee at Butterfly Herbs. Maybe there will be somebody there I know. Raz, Frank, Steve. Maybe there will be somebody there I don't want to see, (names withheld) I'll go to the Catalyst instead. Not as many nouveu chic and the service is better. All within walking distance.
It's amazing what the internet can do, but my mind is still better. However, even in my mind, I couldn't imagine Steve becoming God. Sheesh Boy, them's some pretty big boots your wearin'!
I think I'll go stand on a wild beach, watch the waves, try to catch a few small herring, and thank whatever it was that put me here for all the in' luck and good fortune I've had in my life.
It's not the mountains, but it almost works the same. If that fails, well there is always the night sky. Look up my friends....just ing look up.

Strangely enough, today -- I was walking across the concrete of the community college where I teach in this city -- and the air was filled with the smell of tar and construction heat, the welders on the low roofs bent over pieces of metal, the clouds low and gray and metallic and that before snow feeling...the geese have finished passing and the leaves are nearly down and for no reason at all I was brought back to Montana...a kind of swirling, collapsing feeling of sound and smell and time and it seemed strange to climb into my car and not have that land cradling me. And I go home and I go to your site.

9:34am September 2, 2001 john and Jackson Smith -- Jackson and I are enjoying the peace sign site. We hiked to the sign a week before it was dismantled. Great to see in today's Missoulian that the symbol survives in yards around our fair town. Rather coyote like, don't ya think? The more they try to run us off the more we spread out and multiply. Now there are 9 peace sign symbols out there instead of just one. Wow. We took pictures on our hike. I made some T shirts. All because they were going to remove the peace sign. Probably wouldn't have thought to make a T shirt of it if not for that. See. Thanks for a great site (sight) Steve Sam. John and Jackson
9:57pm August 6, 2001 Laura -- Hey Steve, you happened to cross my mind today so I visited your site to see what was "new". Not much going on in the land of "Oz", just a lot of HEAT!! Hope y'all are cooler up in Montana.
3:09pm May 23, 2001 Conrad Burns -- Get rid of the vandalism above the university! I object to having to see the letter 'M' up on the mountain. It is a disgrace to all right-thinking people. Everyone knows it stands for 'Marijuana'. Also, the clock tower down below has been displaying the secret message '4:20' at least 2 times every day and in the pot smoker's 'lingo', this means that people should get stoned at that time. How can the university tolerate such blatant advocacy of illegal drug use? It is an outrage!! However, it's typical of the leftist communists who are running our media and educational institutions

Late March in Minneapolis. Nighttime. Thawing. We need a way in this world to feel connected, to be grounded ... and I know those years, in Missoula, for me were the closest I've ever come to feeling that way. The particular smell of the rattlesnake trail in spring, late runs through the streets looking in people's windows and coveting their gardens. Whatever trade offs there might be for another life ... I don't think they're worth it. Your site brings me back to Missoula in a powerful way. To EB White and drinking coffee at Bernices in the early dark of winter...and first lines of stories read out loud. A wonderful site.

6:36pm March 9, 2001 Scott Gustin -- Hello Steve,
Hope the kid (which one?) is better by now. Probably just wanting some attention. So this looks like it works. Kinda fun reading names from Missoula I remember and can now think about. Life in Oz is lovely. Still need rain, but the fishing is good. The prime minister in an act of desperation, caused by inflicting this nation with a GST (gross sales tax)is now offering first time homebuyers and builders of new homes $14,000. To help out the building trades. Which slumped to almost stopping. We just may have to build a house. But honestly the Aussie dollar is only worth about .51 US right now. A good time to come visit I'd say. Cheaper than Mexico! Anyway, enough of that. Let's rig up that web cam thingy. LEt the boys see each other.
cheers
