Crystal Park is a 220-acre site located at the top of the Pioneer Mountains, in the upper Big Hole Valley, in Montana. I like going there every year. The place is truly bizarre. The forest service lets people dig (with hand tools) and keep what they find. The entire area is covered with hundreds and hundreds of holes, most about 4 feet deep and 12 feet in diameter. People dig for quartz crystals (which include amethyst and smokey quartz and sceptre varieties). Rocks like this one litter the ground, and you can find beautiful crystals without having to do any digging at all... but of course, it is no fun unless you move several tons of earth....

More information about Crystal Park, as well as crystal prospecting and crystal digging locations around the world can be found at

4 Sam wanted to try digging on the south end of the ridge this year, where there are almost no existing holes. He dug this hole by himself in one day. He started digging about 8:00am. Notice that he was throwing the dirt away from the edge of the hole. This took a lot of work...

18 All of these crystal were found in a single day. Of course, we just happened to chose a great place to dig.

32 Here is a full lay-out of some of the equipment that is used to dig for crystals. The GPS is not really needed, but is useful if you want to come back to the same spot a year or so later. The screen is home made out of 2x2 lumber and hardware cloth. The spray bottle and toothbrush are used for cleaning crystals. The only specialized equipment are two tools from Eastwing: a small pry bar and a gem

35 Some crystal park crystals.
The large amaythist at the top is the same one that is Sam Saroff found, and which is shown in a earlier photo.
This photo isnt so good. I was tired. I had just driven back from Crystal Park after having spent three days digging and shoveling several tons of dirt. When we got home we took out some of the crystals we had just dug up, as well as a few from earlier years

I had just driven back from Crystal Park after having spent three days digging and shoveling several tons of dirt. When we got home we took out some of the crystals we had just dug up, as well as a few from earlier years, and put them on one of my black tee-shirts. Then I took this photo and went to bed.... I'll try for a better pic soon.
