Survival Lists - or, things learned
(If broke, do not be in a city.... my best times have been when I have had
no money at all)
On a three week walk alone in Rockies , you should have
1) Great boots and heavy socks.
2) Lots of good matches.
3) Fishing line and hooks.
4) Swiss Army knife with tweezers.
5) Fifty feet of nylon chord.
6) Water-proof nylon poncho.
7) Notebook and pencils.
8) A good compass (maybe a map too).
9) Two quart water bottles.
10) Harmonicas in the keys of C and G
In New York City, if wandering alone for a month, always have
1) Great walking shoes or boots.
2) $20 dollar bill inside shoe.
3) Credit card in a vest pocket.
4) A $20 bill in pants pocket.
5) Lots of ones and quarters.
6) A calm attitude.
7) Addresses of friends.
8) Sun glasses.
9) Subway map.
10) Swiss Army knife with cork-screw.

On a four day business trip to Los Angeles alone you need
1) A detailed street map and a mid-sized rental car.
2) Two credit cards in two pockets.
3) Driver's license and two $100 bills in a wallet.
4) Sunglasses.
5) Lightweight walking shoes.
6) A small compass.
7) Cell phone with automatic roaming.
8) Swiss Army knife with everything.
9) Swimming shorts and a towel.
10) Notebook and pencil.
When working alone at a computer for several months, make sure to have nearby
1) A radio.
2) A CD player with lots of CDs.
3) A poetry anthology next to the monitor.
4) Telephone and phone numbers of true friends.
5) Lots of drinking water.
6) Books by e.e. cummings.
7) A good chair.
8) Swiss Army knife with magnifying glass.
9) A window to look out of at the mountains..
10) Memories of traveling alone through the mountains.
